Into The Abyss...
Topic: My Time In the WAR.

So, with a flash and a dash of this and that, plus a bit of the WAR character editor, my Dark Elven Sorceress, Akane, was born and cast into the abyss of warfare that is WAR.  The game makes no bones about it, it is WAR everywhere, all the time.  My character came to being in the middle of an invasion and was immediately set to tasks to further that invasion against the High Elves, mainly by killing them in as brutal a manner as possible.  This is one of the things that really sets WAR apart from other MMORPGs.  While most are content to put forth lands that have seen strife and have some conflict, WAR is comprised of lands that are in strife and filled with ongoing conflict.  In the Warhammer universe, there is only room for war, and WAR is no execption to the rule.

After slaughtering Elven defenders and dark sprites for a while, I moved up the coast to the second quest hub, and away from the starting areas.  Right next to the giant black arks that house the invasion force of the Dark Elves, I began anew to push forward the dark goals of the witch-king, complete such quests as killing and enslaving High Elves at every turn.  It can certainly be said that the forces of destruction are pure evil,  not some mamby pamby girl scout troop of simulated ill will.  Not only do they do evil things, but they mean it and have fun while doing it.  Yep, gotta love it.

After a while at the second quest hub, I had pretty much done all I could, so I moved further inland to the Spires, and not only another quest hub, but the first of the Public Quests for my Dark Elf.  Now, Public Quests are important, not only because they are fairly unique to the WAR, and fun, but also because they award influence, and allow one to get influence based rewards from a nearby Rally Master.  Yes, rewards, and who can turn down good stuff like that?  Really though, they are a blast, mostly.  The first one at the spires consists of three parts:  Killing High Elf troops, Kiling High Elf spell casters and finally, killing a huge dragon.  Yes, you heard that right, a dragon.  Most MMORPGs don't even let you get a sniff a dragon anywhere close to an early quest hub, and certainly don't give you a great chance to kill one at level four.  Granted, it takes a decent size group to do it, but it's a great time.

After slaughtering the dragon for a while, I went about completing as many quests as possible, and began to join in the PvP scenario available as well.  Again, something that servers many purposes.  The two most important to me right now are killing other players for fun, and earning reknown points to I can level up Akane's reknown ranking and get some goodies.  Mainly killing other players for fun though.  The first scenario is a battle over two altars, after which claiming both a side can score heavily and hopefully slaughter some of the opponent's forces without losing too many of your own.  Seemed like by and large, Destruction forces were ruling these instances, at least the ones I played.  We only lost a couple that I participated in, and both of those were close.

Living the Live
Topic: My Time In the WAR.

And so open beta came to an end, and I without fully deciding what to do.  Yes, I'd preordered a copy of Warhammer Online, and yes, I had originally intended to get it and play it, while kicking Age of Conan out the door, but I was finding it hard to let go.  I'd waited so very long for Age of Conan, and had been in the beta, trying to make it a better game, for so very long.  Truthfully, the game itself is fun, it's just the way it was pushed out the door so very pre-maturely, and then the way Funcom continued to make misguided attempt after misguided attempt to fix its issues, all the while making things worse and worse.  I guess that last bit was what finally pushed me over the edge and made me cancel my AoC account in favor of WAR.  I'm glad I did.

Bouncing Around the Beta
Topic: My Time In the WAR.

And so my time in open beta for WAR began.  The plus side is, I got to play in the open beta.  The downside is, my playtime was greatly reduced due to preparations for the near miss of Hurricane Ike.  This pretty much all adds up to me not getting as much time with the game as I would have like to had previous to making the purchase decision.  This set of unusual circumstances also almost lead to me deciding to go ahead and pass on buying WAR in favor of being optimistic about Age of Conan (and yes, even though I was finally forced to cancel my Age of Conan subscription due to Funcom's ongoing inability to remove their heads from their collective asses, I'm still optimistic that with the recent change in leadership, AoC will become the game it should always have been, or maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part, who knows).

And So It Begins...
Topic: My Time In the WAR.

And so my time with Warhammer Online:  Age of Reckoning began a couple of weeks ago.  Oddly enough, until that time, I really didn't have a great deal of interest in WAR, as it has come to be called.  I was busy beta testing on Age of Conan, the game I had waited so long for, and although I knew of its existance in a vague and esoteric kind of way, I hadn't put any real thought into what, exactly, WAR was going to be.  Would it be a straight copy of World of Warcraft?  It is not exactly uncommon knowledge that WoW was heavily based on the Warhammer Mythos, after all.  How would WAR go about distiguishing itself from its progenitor/offspring?  Would it be the PvP game that Funcom had promised Age of Conan would be, but had so miserably failed to deliver?  Exactly what would WAR be, and where would it fit in the vast MMORPG landscape?  Would it be worth playing, or more importantly, worth paying a monthly fee to play?  Questions, questions, questions.  So I set out to find some answers.
