One of the Finest Console RPGs of All-Time.

Skies of Arcadia is the pinnacle of the role playing game genre on the Dreamcast. I hear someone out there saying, "But the rest of the RPGs on the Dreamcast suck!" and they are right for the most part, but this in no way dimishes the masterpiece that is Skies. This is not a perfect game by any means, it doesn't do anything innovative or genre busting, it is just a perfect combination of all the things that make the RPG player go weak in the knees with excitement.

To start with, the story is pretty much the normal, boy saves world fare, but for some reason, it works exceptionally well here. The game is able to draw the player into the story, and make the player care about the story and it's characters, and in the end, that's what really matters in an RPG. All the battle systems and innovation in the world won't make an RPG work if the player doesn't give a crap what happens to the characters. I won't tell the story here, either you already know it or you should buy the game and play through it to find out, but it is exeptional and fun, and will keep you coming back for the sixty hours it takes to complete this game.

Most of the game's systems are fairly standard RPG fare, and the load times before random battles are far too lengthy, but you will have fun playing this game just the same, and will certainly give though to playing through it again when you are done.

5 out of 5
