Review: McDonald's at 6306 Saratoga, Corpus Christi, TX
Topic: The Restaurant Review

Ok, first things first.  Make no mistake about it, I love the McRib sandwich from McDonald's and can't wait for its return each time.  I then stuff myself with them until the promotion is over, then try to recover from the barbecue pork sandwich overdose. Yes, when done right, McRib is a glorious thing and I am a McRib junkie from way back.  I'd probably way a thousand pounds if they kept it on the menu all the time.  I'm willing to risk it though, if they would like to make it a permanent addition.

Anyway, so my little one loves McDonald's, as do most small children.  The Happy Meals, the toys, the playground area, interacting with the other children, for her it is nothing but a good time, and since the location at 6306 Saratoga is just down the road from my house, we usual frequent that location.  Generally speaking, I don't have too many complaints about the location, they do a passable job of keeping it clean, and the food is usually as good as it gets at a McDonald's, whatever your opinion of that may be.  My guess is that you don't need a reviewer to tell you whether you like the food or not at this point.   The staff has always been friendly and helpful, and while not perfect, they have always made right any mistakes quickly and helpfully.

This time, however, things were a bit different for our weekly visit.  McRib returned last week, so I have been on my McRib trip since then, getting them from various locations around the city, but mainly the location on the west side of Corpus Christi, near downtown, and the Saratoga location near my house.  The west side location has provided me with perfect McRibs each time.  The Saratoga location, and the subject material for this review, however, has been a sad failure.  In case you are unfamiliar with the way a McRib should look according to the McDonald's site (and I think this picture is hilarious):

As you can see, it is a pork patty, dipped in barbecue sauce, with onions and pickles, served on an oblong roll.  Just a fantastic thing.  So baby and I were at the Saratoga McDonald's getting the usual, a four piece chicken nugget Happy Meal with milk and fries, and I, the McRib value meal with the extra McRib for a buck. All was well and good.  Our order was prepared quickly and fairly accurately, with the only omission being a barbecue dipping sauce for baby's nuggets.  While that may seem trivial, I assure you it is not for baby. No matter though, it was easily remedied and the staff quickly provided the necessary dipping sauce.

The problems didn't start until we got back to our table.  First off, the drink area looked like the ice maker and soda fountains had exploded all over the place.  Not a big deal, but it would have been nice had someone wiped the place down a bit.  The second issue is that none of the tables that were open in the play area had been cleaned.  There were quite a few open ones, so it wasn't an issue that a few people had just left, it was an issue of no one having done a proper cleaning job in a while.   Again, not a super big deal, kids are messy and sometimes tables don't get wiped down, so I did it myself and we sat down to dinner.  Imagine my surprise when I opened my sandwich box to fine this:

I mean, seriously McDonald's, hamburger buns?  The McRib hasn't been back long enough for you to run out of the proper buns, and it wasn't like I was there late or anything, it was only six in the afternoon.  Maybe I've just been lucky, but I haven't received a McRib on a hamburger bun at any other location I've eaten at so far, so why have I gotten this kind of treatment at the Saratoga McDonald's two out of the three times I've been there?  Really guys, it's time to get your business together and get it right.  Worst part of all is that they don't mention they don't have the right rolls to you when you order, so you don't have a choice in the matter.  It really pisses me off.  At least tell me you don't have the right makings for the sandwich when I order, so I can decide if I want half my McRib patty hanging out the end of the bun.   And just in case the folks that run that location don't know, this is how it's done on the west side and every other McDonald's I've been to:

The Outback Steakhouse
Topic: The Restaurant Review

It has been a busy, busy birthday weekend (her birthday, not mine) for the wife an I, and while I would spend several long paragraphs explaining it all in excruciating detail, it mostly has nothing to do with food, and even less to do with this topic by and large, so, I will stick to the task at hand. That task, of course, is talking to you about food, and in this specific instance, restaurant food. Even more specifically, The Outback Steakhouse.

Now, it wouldn't be fair to say that we make the Outback a regular place to eat, as a matter of fact, I can count the times I have eaten there on one hand. It isn't that the Outback is a bad place to eat, it's just that for us, it seems to be a bit pricey for a chain, and a bit pricey for what you get. I'm sure that some may disagree, but that's the way I feel. There are certainly some nice things I can say about the restaurant, though. Firstly, the cheese fries are great. Two types of cheese, bacon bits, and ranch dressing to dip with make it an appetizer I enjoy. The wife also ordered a Bloomin' Onion. These don't do much for me, but she really enjoys them. For me, I don't care for the way they always have some batter that doesn't get fried. I'd rather have onion rings, for my money. To each their own.

After the appetizers, we moved on to our main courses. The wife a large steak, which she seemed to enjoy greatly (except for the small piece of bone she found the hard way in her boneless cut), and I had the grilled chicken breast with vegetables. The chicken was moist, and came with a side of barbecue sauce which was suitably spicy, and the vegetables were steamed and tasty. We quickly polished off our main courses, respectively, and moved on the dessert menu.

Now, usually, we would have both gotten separate desserts, I being a big fan of Key Lime Pie, and the wife, not so much, but in this case, we decided to split a large piece of chocolate cake with a side of vanilla ice cream. The cake was very chocolate, and the ice cream was pretty standard vanilla. For me, the cake was a little bit dry, and the ice cream has tiny chunks of ice in it, which I didn't expect.

Overall, the experience wasn't bad, but it sure could have been better, especially considering the prices that the Outback is charging now days. Makes me wonder if they have forgotten they are a chain restaurant. The service was slow as well.

Well, we had a great lunch at Thai Spice.  You can read my previous review for this great restaurant and it all pretty much stands as I said it before.  If you are ever in town, it's a great place to eat.

Today is my beautiful wife's birthday.  She is still much younger than me.  Happy Birthday, love.  Nice thing about it, is we will be going to our favorite Thai restaurant for lunch.  Can't wait for lunch.  I love the Lemongrass Chicken they serve.

Topic: The Restaurant Review

There has certainly been a change in the tastes of the average American diner over the past fifteen or so years (maybe a little further back if you live on one of the coasts) and to meet the new tastes, new restaurants have risen forth. In this particular area, several Thai restaurants have opened over the past five years, which has been just a delight for me as Thai food is one of my favorites. Now, my favorite place to have a nice Thai meal used to be Mon's, but they have since packed up and moved off to San Antonio. A major disappointment, to be sure, but into every life a little rain must fall. Speaking of favorites, the whole point of this post in the first place was to talk about my lunch on Monday, or more specifically the restaurant that I got that lunch at on Monday, Thai Spice.

Now, Thai Spice opened up originally in a building that had housed one of the local favorites (Vietnam) before they moved downtown, so the location wasn't bad. Even such, it was a while after they opened that my brother (younger than I) and myself first discovered the delicious joys that were contained inside this new Thai place. Of course, like the good sons we are, we immediately spread the news of our discovery to my mother and grandmother, who then proceeded to make Thai Spice their near daily luncheon place. Not that I can blame them. Shortly there after, Thai Spice follow the example of their predecessor and moved downtown as well, and in an incredible twist of fate, right across the street from the building I work in. Not a bad move at all, if I do say so as an obvious beneficiary.

So, taking advantage of my luck, I ventured forth to meat the women of my family (the wife, mother and grandmother) for lunch at Thai Spice on Monday. Lunch was, as always, wonderful. I had the Chicken with Lemon grass (highly recommended). The meal started with a cup of spicy vegetable soup with a side of fried wantons (or their wrapper to be more presice), followed by an order of freshly made chicken spring rolls. Even though the lunch special always comes with a little appetizer (spring roll, pan fried pot sticker, etc.) I always like to get an order of fresh spring rolls. They are excellent, no matter what the wife says. The lunch special included a spring roll, jasmine rice, and fresh fruit for desert. Everything was fantastic, and, as usual, my eyes were bigger than my stomach and I ended up taking two spring rolls home.

Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better lunch experience, and it has always been that way each time I have been there. The food is excellent, and the people are nice. There isn't much else that one can expect or want for that matter. Try it yourself, if you find yourself in Corpus Christi.
